The Women's Christian Temperance Union was a national movement, widely known as the W.C.T.U. Organized at a national convention in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874, the group's primary aim was prohibition of alcohol, though after 1879 they broadened their focus to include a number of social reform issues including labor, prostitution, public health, sanitation, women's suffrage and international peace.
