Prominent citizen, William Schwartau dies Monday

PAUL SMITHS — William P. Schwartau, 77, of Northbrook Lodge, Paul Smiths, died Monday, Nov. 23, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born September 22, 1915 in Brooklyn, son of Henry and Jennie (Matzner) Schwartau.

He attended the University of Alabama for one year in 1932 and City University of New York from 1933 to 1936. He was a member of the Army Reserve and was called to active duty in 1941 and made 2nd Lieutenant in 1942. He served in North Africa and Europe. He later achieved the rank of Major and was awarded the Bronze star. He served until 1945.

From 1945 until 1952, he worked at various restaurants in New York City, ending with his promotion to general manager of the Brass Rail Restaurant chain. In 1952, he purchased the Northbrook Lodge in Paul Smiths and operated it as a summer resort.

From 1953 to 1978, he was Administrative Assistant and faculty member of the hotel department of Paul Smith's College.

An active civic volunteer, he was president of the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce from 1963-64, president of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, president of the Franklin County Economic Opportunity Council and president of the Saranac Lake Central Board of Education during the mid-1970s. He was also a member of the Saranac Lake General Hospital Board of Trustees, serving as vice-president from 1980-1982.

Mr. Schwartau is survived by his wife, the former Mary Louise Woldenberg; a daughter, Laura Jean of Brooklyn; and a son, Philip W. of Boston. He was predeceased by his first wife, Norma (Donop) Schwartau, in 1979.

There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home with the Rev. Lester Loder officiating.

Friends wishing to remember Mr. Schwartau may make contributions to the Saranac Lake Free Library, the Kidney Dialysis Unit at CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh or the Paul Smiths-Gabriels First Response Unit (FREMSA).
