Dr. William W. Ely was a physician from Rochester, New York, and a sportsman who in 1868 created one of the first detailed maps of the Adirondacks. The map went through many revision over the next 25 years, and was included in W.H.H. Murray's 1869 Adventures in the Wilderness.

He made the first recorded ascents of Ampersand Mountain in 1872.
