Harriet Jane Stiles Lupino was a TB patient who came to Saranac Lake for her health, met and married her husband here, and lived most of the rest of her life in this community. She graduated from Crouse-Irving School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1946. She worked for the state of New York at Ray Brook when it was a tuberculosis hospital.

Harriet J. (Stiles) Lupino

Harriet Jane Stiles Lupino, 86, formerly of Saranac Lake, died Wedensday, Feb. 9, 2011 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

Born in Hammond on July 16, 1924, she was the daughter of Leroy and Harriet (Harland) Stiles. She married Fred Lupino on June 28, 1952 at the First Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her on June 26, 1978. Harriet graduated from Hammond High School in 1942 and later attended and graduated from Crouse-Irving School of Nursing with a degree as a registered nurse in 1946. She worked for the state of New York at Ray Brook when it was a tuberculosis hospital and then when it was a female drug rehabilitation facility. She later worked at Sunmount until her retirement in 1984. Harriet volunteered after retirement for many years for the American Red Cross and delivering Meals on Wheels. She was the organist at the First Presbyterian Church and Christian Science Society in Saranac Lake for many years. She also served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member since 1950. 

She is survived by one son, Anthony J. Lupino of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Ann G. Lupino of Peru, N.Y.; six grandchildren: Derek C. Fortune of Rochester, Duane A. Fortune of Grants Pass, Ore., Jaclyn Coppolo Drollette and her husband Linus of Peru, N.Y., John A. Coppolo Jr. of Lenoir, and Ferris Lupino and Travis Lupino of Seattle, Wash.; whom Harriet enjoyed over the years. She couldn't do enough for the grandchildren and they were always welcome at her home. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Linus Bradan Drollette of Peru, N.Y. She was predeceased by her mother in 1924 (two weeks after giving birth to Harriet); her father in 1971; and one sister, Jean George in 1981.
