The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine Waterloo Regional Campus is a satellite campus of McMaster University. Located adjacent to the School of Pharmacy at 10 Victoria Street South in Kitchener, the campus is a collaboration between McMaster and the University of Waterloo.
The campus hosts 28 undergraduate medical students per graduating class for a total of 84 students at any given time. Beginning in December of each year, a new cohort of students arrives in Kitchener-Waterloo following three months of integrated studies in Hamilton. For the following eleven months students take part in a primarily academic teaching program with the primary focus on class room education with some clinical experiences in area hospitals. Thereafter, from December of their second year, the class progresses to the Clerkship portion of the medical program. This 14 month portion of the program places learners in 2-6 week rotations through various medical specialties. The students work full time hours in hospitals, family health teams, and private practices. For the majority of this time students work under the direction physicians in Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph, Fergus, and Hamilton. However, most learners will take the time to travel to other Canadian and International hospitals to receive training in the specialty to which they aspire.
Upon graduation from this three year program, WRC students obtain the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) and move on to a residency program for specialty specific training.
