The sounds of Africa hit Liverpool's Sefton Park each summer during the Africa Oyé festival. This showcase of live African and Caribbean music presents world-class artists and is the UK's major African music event.
As well as fantastic live music, the Oyé Village offers and arts and crafts market, a variety of African, Indian and Caribbean food, massages, smoothies and a beer tent. Best of all, this two day festival is FREE and open to all.
Bonfire night fireworks displays: 5th Nov 2010
Fireworks explode to music during Liverpool's spectacular Bonfire Night events, which take place at Sefton Park, Walton Hall Park and Newsham Park. Up to 100,000 people come from all over the city and the surrounding area to enjoy the displays. All the displays start at 7.30pm and last for around 20 minutes.

The Mathew Street festival 2010
Over 300,000 of you attended the 2009 festival over the August bank holiday weekend which made last years festival one of the biggest turn outs ever!
Even the downpours on sunday couldn’t turn you away and the die hard fans stuck around to make Dios Salve A La Reina’s tunnel performance one of the stand out performances of the festival.
You came, you sang, you danced and judging from the feedback we’ve had in MSMF headquarters, it seems you had a darn good time!
A big thank you also goes out to those that worked at this years festival. Beatles day 2010
It will be back on Saturday 10th July 2010. Prepare to don your mop-top in the name of charity, and visit the host of Beatles themed family fundraising events taking place throughout the city of Liverpool, and other cities throughout the world. The climax of the day will be the BEATLES DAY CONCERT in each city in which a host of stars will perform the best of the Beatles songs. The concert in Liverpool will once again be hosted by the irrepressible Ricky Tomlinson. Beatles Mop-tops will be available free, with your purchase of a ticket to the concert, from the Tourist Information office in Whitechapel or from the Arena Box Office. They are also be available for sale at various outlets around the Northwest UK and online from the"Shop" page on this website. The Beatles Day Foundation is a charitable trust that raises money for many worthy causes particularly those improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Beneficiaries of the proceeds raised from this year's Beatles Day will include The Imagine Appeal for Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the Marina Dalglish Appeal for a radiotherapy centre in Liverpool. Any charitable organisation to can apply to our trustees for funding of projects from any monies raised in their locality for Beatles Day.

The last fashion week was a huge success! Liverpool fashion week
Liverpool Fashion Week 2009 went with an amazing bang with a 70% increase in media articles, 150% increase in TV coverage and a 2000% increase in promotional activities. The event was carried out across 3 venues and generated total crowds of around 11,000 people during the week. This was just shy of the target of 15,000 people we had hoped to attract.
Due to the success of the event the management team has decided to create Liverpool Fashion Week October and have the second Fashion Week of the year officially in place. This will take place on October 26th to October 30th
With a new company at the helm of the Fashion Week in Charge of Models and styling the event it will have a more professional and slick feel to the whole event. We have invested more time in bringing World wide brands and models to the October event as well as UK celebrities. The event will be centered around Couture and High Street brands. With New designers taking control of one show. As with every event there is different opportunities for your company to be involved in the project. With a high amount of exposure and Eye balls in the high spending demographics as well as an intensive corporate marketing strategy Liverpool Fashion Week ticks all the boxes to ensure your product is in the prime place of exposure. The fashion week this year was subject to activity wide promotion campaign that covered Billboards, Radio, Newpapers, Posters, Magazines, Flyer\'s, Stickers and cars. This will again be in place for the October event with even more promotional materials and tie ups being created We also bring in celebs from soaps, TV and other areas to create the the whole ambiance of a desired lifestyle. We are currently negotiating with several A-list US personalities to host the final night including Ne-Yo and Keri Hilson

Free Entry In 1988 Tate Liverpool opened it's doors for the very first time with a memorable display of Mark Rothko’s The Seagram Murals. Over 20 years later the series will make a welcome return to the gallery. From 2 October 2009 – 21 March 2010 Tate Liverpool's ground floor gallery will be transformed into an emotive display of these nine significant paintings – the walls will be painted grey according to Rothko’s specifications and atmospheric lighting will enhance the dramatic qualities of the works.
Perceived, as the artist intended, in reduced light and in a compact space, the subtlety of the layered surfaces slowly emerges, revealing the solemn and meditative character of the works-one not to be missed.
This display is presented in conjunction with the Tate Collection display DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture. Supported by Tate Liverpool Patrons Afro Modern: Journeys through the Black Atlantic

About the exhibition
This major exhibition, inspired by Paul Gilroy's seminal book The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness (1993), identifies a hybrid culture that spans the Atlantic, connecting Africa, North and South America, The Caribbean and Europe. The exhibition is the first to trace in depth the impact of Black Atlantic culture on Modernism and will reveal how black artists and intellectuals have played a central role in the formation of Modernism from the early twentieth century to today.
From the influences of African art on the Modernist forms of artists like Picasso, to the work of contemporary artists such as Kara Walker, Ellen Gallagher and Chris Ofili, the exhibition will map out visual and cultural hybridity in modern and contemporary art that has arisen from the journeys made by people of Black African descent.
Divided into seven chronological chapters, from early twentieth century avant-garde movements such as the Harlem Renaissance to current debates around 'Post-Black' art, this exhibition opens up an alternative transatlantic reading of Modernism and its impact on contemporary culture for a new generation.
Tate Liverpool has initiated a city-wide programme of parallel exhibitions and events that explore the themes and ideas of Afro Modern: Journeys through the Black Atlantic. DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture takes an ambitious and revolutionary look at the history of modern and contemporary sculpture. This new Tate collection display continues to examine and question the trajectory of artistic innovation in twentieth-century art and beyond.
Sculpture in the form of object, installation, assemblage and ready-made will sit alongside more surprising forms, such as painting, video, photography, language and performance.

Aubrey Williams: Atlantic Fire 15 January 2010 to 11 April 2010 Free admission
Aubrey Williams’ art resists definition and the significance of his work was not fully appreciated in his own lifetime. 'Aubrey Williams: Atlantic Fire' comprises of 14 paintings, which demonstrate the strength of the artist’s work and show that Williams was an important international artist. His paintings feature fragmented objects, intense natural colours and hint at musical counterpoint and dramatic spatial effects.
Williams was a Guyanese-born artist and many factors influenced his work. He admired American abstract expressionist painters Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky and his artistic interests included ornithology, the environment and the music of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Above all, a preoccupation with indigenous and ancient cultures of Central and South America, defined his artistic vision and helped him develop his own visual language.
His interest in these cultures enabled him to assert an authentic Caribbean identity within a modern mainstream art world. As he put it:
“The act of painting, the act of daring to make art, the Arawak had a word for it and they called it Timehri… Now, Timehri to the Arawak means the mark of the hand of man...That is the word for art for me."
This exhibition contributes to a reassessment of the artist and provides a rare opportunity to see an important group of his work in the North of England.

The Royal standard
Members of The Royal Standard The Royal Standard, an artist-led gallery, studio group and social workspace in Liverpool is looking to appoint a new team of directors to take forward the organisation in 2010 – 2011 and continue its exciting and ambitious programme of exhibitions and events alongside managing a vibrant studio complex.
This is a fantastic opportunity for artists at an early stage in their careers to develop and shape what has already established itself nationally as one of the UK's most innovative and forward-thinking artist-run spaces, whilst learning new skills and invigorating their careers in an exciting and inspiring environment.
Roles are not funded but successful applicants are encouraged to seek funding for activity on joining the team. The roles will be for approximately a 2-year period on a rolling-committee basis and newly appointed directors will work with current directors for an initial handover and training period.
Team members will be expected to commit to working between 1/2 and 3 days per week.
We are looking for 3-5 people whose tasks may include the management of a busy artists' studio complex (27 artists), curation and gallery management, exhibition installation and sales, marketing and design, event planning and delivery, budget management and book-keeping, fundraising, building maintenance and website management, and would expect applicants to have experience in some of these fields. Role distribution within the organisation will be tailored according to successful applicants' individual skills and the overall team dynamic, although all directors will have a degree of responsibility for the overall direction and success of the project.

From Liverpool Biennial 2008 Liverpool Biennial presents Touched 18 September - 28 November 2010 Touched will consist of new art that succeeds in affecting the viewer: art that moves us in mind, body and soul.
The new commissions for Touched will be announced early spring 2010.
The discussions within the curatorial team set out with the recognition that if art is to be memorable, interesting or influential it has to start by moving us. Touched presents affective art, and so becomes a sketch map of the affections - passion, rage, lust, pleasure, fear and joy. Throughout history, artists have refreshed their practice through returning to these permanent motivators in the human psyche. The collapse and restructuring of financial markets in the countries formerly known as G8 has given urgency to our need for an art whose outlook is characterised by inter-dependence and mutual responsibility. Artists depend on their art touching its audience to communicate shared meaning. The erotic frisson between art and its audience is the same as that between individuals who share interests. An engaged and dynamic artistic practice

Rachmaninov, Bartók and Hindemith all had to flee from Europe to America – and they each responded with a torrent of melody.
If you like Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody, you’ll love the Broadway pizzazz and lush romantic tunes of his Third Symphony. Bartók’s last concerto, meanwhile, is an irresistible celebration of life - by turns deeply tranquil and thrillingly flamboyant, it's a perfect vehicle for Korean virtuoso Kun Woo Paik.
And Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber sounds terribly serious... until you actually hear it! Pure knockabout fun, delivered with classic Petrenko flair. Liverpool-born composer Emily Howard (b.1979) is a rising star in the British new music scene. Her music has been described as ‘relishing orchestral colour in the way the best contemporary Nordic composers do, with ear-catching harmonies commuting between the granitic and the silvery‘. Born in Cork in 1974 and now based in the South Pennines, Ailís Ní Ríain is one of Ireland's most exciting young composers. A published playwright as well as prizewinning composer, she has written and directed many music- theatre pieces.
On this commission, she writes: ‘Catapulting me from juncture to juncture, my mind was racing with the possibilities in this language, not just music this time, something else, something that allows me to say more, say something specific, say something straight. To simply say something in sound. My new commission for Ensemble 10/10 will concern itself with the theatre of the mind.‘ The music of Merseyside composer Gary Carpenter ‘dazzles with its pungent pithiness’ (The Times); his Azaleas for harp trio was the winner of the chamber music category at the 2006 British Composer Awards. He has composed more than ten music-theatre works.

Two contrasting Bach keyboard concertos are presented alongside John Dowland arrangements, which showcase the Elizabethan composer's sweet melancholy with loose, jazzy overtones.
Andy Sheppard, a longtime collaborator with Joanna MacGregor, joins the orchestra in exploring Dowland as well as Joanna's new orchestral arrangements of Deep River, their hugely successful album evoking the rich tapestry and drama of Deep South traditions.
From Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child and Deep River to tunes by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Nick Cave, expect an evening of stylish classical artistry and great improvisation.
