The host unit at Vandenberg AFB is the 30th Space Wing.

Vandenberg Air Force Base is named in honor of the late General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, second Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force and chief architect of today's modern Air Force.

The size of the base at present is 99,099 acres (401.04 km2). Today, Vandenberg stands as the third largest Air Force base after Eglin AFB in Florida, and Edwards AFB in California.

Many civilians as well as military personnel work at Vandenberg's Western test range.

There were originally plans to launch the Space Shuttle from Vandenberg, but after the explosion, it was considered a perfect location!
