Though Philomath in the past has been historically conservative with a strong influence initially from the United Brethren Church who founded Philomath College, in recent years the city has become more liberal, perhaps due in part to the influence of newcomers who work for Oregon State University and local high tech companies. The politics of the residents tend to be reflected in the city's elected leaders and the political representation of the county in general.

Benton County Board of Supervisors
The board meets at 11:30 a.m. the first four Tuesdays of each month, unless otherwise noticed, in the basement meeting room of Benton Plaza, 408 S.W. Monroe Ave. in downtown Corvallis.
