Photo by Julie JarvisThe Duke Lemur Center was established in 1966 and today is the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates.   Nestled on 85 acres in Duke Forest, the Lemur Center houses about 250 animals, including 233 lemurs encompassing 15 species, along with lorises from India and Southeast Asia and bushbabies from Africa and has the largest collection of lemurs outside of Madagascar.  The major focuses of the Duke Lemur Center are education, conservation and research (non-invasive).

Lemurs are a unique species that evolved in isolation on the island of Madagascar (the only place they are found in the wild).

Many children will also recognize one of the Duke lemurs from the PBS children's show Zoboomafoo.

Multiple levels of public tours to see the lemurs are available at the Duke Lemur Center by reservation for a fee.  The tours are a unique and educational activity great for groups, families and an ideal venue to entertain and impress out-of-town guests.  Visit the Duke Lemur Center's website for complete details about scheduling a tour.
