Description:
The North Carolina Master Chorale was founded in 1942 by Dr. Harry E. Cooper, former chairman of the Meredith College Music Department.
The Chorale performs primarily classical choral works - masses, oratorios, motets, cantatas, etc.- composed by artists such as Bach, Brahms, Britten, Haydn, Handel. Vivaldi, and many others. There is a minimum of four NCMC-produced concerts each season; two produced by the symphonic chorus (The Chorale) and two performances by the professional NCMC Chamber Choir. Performances are held in select venues through and around the triangle area of North Carolina, two more often-used locations being Meymandi Concert Hall in the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts and Kenan Recital Hall at William Peace College.
The number of singers in the Chorale averages 170 as the Chamber Choir averages a smaller 22-person group. Both of which are led by Music Director Dr. Alfred E. Sturgis. General operations are managed by Executive Director Michelle S. Hile.
The mission of the North Carolina Master Chorale is to present exceptional performances of choral music, promote the choral art, and enrich the cultural lives of singers, audiences, artistic communities, and the community at large.
