The bridge on Capital Boulevard over Peace Street (Bridge No. 227) was built in 1954 and has a sufficiency rating of 42.9 out of a possible 100. While the existing bridges is still adequate to support traffic, they are nearing the end of their design lives and need to be replaced in a timely manner. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) proposes to replace the existing bridges on Capital Boulevard (US 70/US 401) over Peace Street in Raleigh.

Photo by Raleigh Public RecordNCDOT is initiating planning, environmental, and design studies for the proposed project. During the planning phase of this project, alternatives will be studied that replace the bridges with new bridges in similar configurations. Alternatives will also be considered that replace the bridges with new bridges in different styles of interchange configurations.

NCDOT is coordinating with the City of Raleigh as the City continues their Capital Boulevard Corridor Study. The bridge replacement project will be consistent with the City’s future vision for this area.

Peace St. /Wade Ave. Bridge Replacements on Capital Blvd

As the result of a planning process for the project, NCDOT has selectedAlternative P5 at Peace Street (square loop interchange) and Alternative W-Base at Wade Avenue (trumpet interchange), and, as of April 2016, is finalizing the design and acquiring the right of way needed to build the bridges The project is expected to be awarded to a contractor in summer 2016, and construction is expected to begin in fall 2016. NCDOT, in coordination with the City of Raleigh, will hold a public meeting in July 2016 to present the final design of the project. The City of Raleigh approved its Capital Boulevard Corridor Study in August 2012. The bridge replacement projects will not restrict the city from completing future projects that fulfill its long-term vision for the area.
