TechShop Raleigh-Durham was the first membership-based do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio that provided you with tools and equipment, classes, wide-open work space and access to a vibrant and supportive community of creative people so that you could build the things you'd always dreamed of. It apparently closed in 2013. The 20,000 square feet contained more than a million dollars of high-quality machines, tools and software: a full metal shop, welding shop, wood shop, ShopBot, Laser Engraver, plastics lab, electronics lab, blacksmith, CNC plasma cutter, computer lab, silk-screen room, sewing and textiles room,  private offices for rent and more. Classes in safety and basic use (SBUs) were required to use the equipment. Project classes were available regularly.

TechShop functioned as a home for inventors, entrepreneurs, hobbyists, artists, makers of all kinds and home improvement projects. The community of insanely geeky, smart, creative, FUN, helpful members was a huge part of this former local resource.

Created  by Jim Newton, a former producer of Mythbusters, TechShop (the parent organization) is based in Northern California and plans to expand nationally. Our Raleigh-Durham TechShop was the second permanent location in the US. There are currently 5 TechShops, with three more scheduled to open soon. TechShop has the potential to change the world.

TechShop is located at 5905 Triangle Drive, Raleigh, NC 27617 just off of Highway 70. It is the first signal light east of I-540.
