Walter Royal Davis Library, SourceWalter Royal Davis Library, or Davis Library, is the main university library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the largest educational building in the state of North Carolina, built over three acres in the center of the UNC campus. The library’s capacity is 1.8 to 2.4 million volumes, and it has a 3,000-person seating capacity. Consisting of eight floors of work and study space, Davis Library has mostly humanities, social science, business and foreign language materials, along with maps, government information, data collections and microforms.

History

The library opened in 1984 and is named after Walter Royal Davis, a native North Carolinian who sat on board of trustees of UNC from 1972 until 1980. After graduating from high school, Davis worked as a clerk and truck driver because he could not afford college. Starting his own small petroleum transport firm, Davis built a business empire he eventually sold to Occidental Petroleum and kept the holdings in oil and real estate.

Architects Leslie M. Boney and Romaldo Giurgola designed the building in the postmodern style with a flexible and modular design. The red-brick motif and architectural elements of the external façade were intentionally chosen to blend with the surrounding historic buildings of campus. The total cost of the building was $22,900,00.

Non-affiliated Borrowers: 30 days

Checked out items may be returned to any library on campus.
