About 1978, the two branches of Security Savings and Loan became Allstate Savings and Loan. Allstate was part of Sears. In 1984 it became Sears Savings. At that time it was 11th largest S&L in California and 24th largest in the nation. The two branches in Santa Cruz County were acquired by American Savings. Sears sold their banking group in 1987 to Citicorp Savings. In March 1990, Citicorp Savings changed their name to Citibank.
In 1995, Sears spun off Allstate Insurance as a separate company. Allstate Insurance started a banking service called Allstate Bank in 1998. While you can start an account with some Allstate Insurance agents, the bank is basically an internet bank. The bank does not deal in cash, and is limited in other services.
