The Big Leaved Maple, or Acer macrophyllum, is Santa Cruz County's most commonly seen native deciduous tree, and provides the area with some fall color amidst the evergreens. When the tree is younger its bark is light grey, but as it matures, it changes to a darker grey and developes cracks. The tree grows in moist areas, can reach a height of 80 feet at maturity, and can be used to make maple syrup, though the practice is not common. Historically, parts of the tree were used in basket making.
