Blastolene is the name given to the suped-up, custome hot rods built by, "a Brotherhood of autonomous individual artists and craftsmen who encourage each other's creativity."¹ Blastolene artist Michael Leeds lives in Santa Cruz and describes the Blastolene frame of mind, "It [building cars] expresses the identity of who we are. It also expresses this love of speed, power, autonomy and freedom. We create our own superhero identity."²

The other Blastolene artists, including Randy Grubb, live throughout California.
