Borders was a national chain of bookstores. A branch was established in Santa Cruz after a contentious debate about whether or not the city wanted the presence of such a large national corporation downtown. After first opening, the store was the target of acts of vandalism. One rumor has it that the worst of these attacks was a flood of the building at night, which damaged the store and nearby businesses. Since then, much of the controversy surrounding the store died down, though it was still despised by many locals.

The computer books section after the 40% off closeout sale. On February 16, 2011, Borders announced the closing of 200 of its 642 bookstores as part of Chapter 11 proceedings. One of the stores listed was the branch at 1200 Pacific Ave, Suite 100 in Santa Cruz. It closed in April, 2011 after a series of sales to clear out the merchandise. The Borders Express store in the Capitola Mall was not on the list of stores to be closed.

In July 2011, it was announced that Borders could not find a bidder willing to buy and run the company. The company was sold to liquidators and the liquidators will be closing all stores after liquidation sales are over.

Borders was known as a Public Wi-Fi Hot spot. They allowed free access to the internet. Although the coffee shop closed in February, 2011 they continued the free Wi-Fi a few days past the closing in April, 2011. As of May 2012, Borders was still listed as a free Wi-Fi location in the Good Times publication. (Over a year after the Wi-Fi at Borders was turned off.)

2011-03-03 21:10:55   I tried posting the announcement of the store's closure the day it was announced. The message was deleted even though a proper reference was included. I will post this comment again, unless I forget, since it will surely be deleted as well. —75.45.4.137
