Located at 519 Fair Avenue on the Westside of Santa Cruz, these structures have been a subject of mystery for countless who have seen them. They were designed and built during World War II by the Kitchen Brothers, (Kenneth and Raymond) who were inspired by Orthodox Christian architecture. The brothers planned to use the property as a residence, but still hoped to get it declared as a church to save money on taxes. The property was then sold to a Greek Orthodox Minister who felt a connection to the building, but it was never known to be used officially as a church. The Kitchen Brothers moved away from the area in the 1950s, but their name remained. Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva, who had a radio program on KUSP, named themselves the Kitchen Sisters out of admiration for the brothers, and they use the name to this day as radio personalities on National Public Radio.
