The initial steps to take, of course, are the same as in any other city— you need to figure out what you want. What sort of place are you looking for? Apartment? House? Studio? How much are you willing to pay? And what area would you like to live in?

A Look at Housing Prices

Pricing varies across the county, though they seem to be higher on average than many other parts of California. Older houses, especially those in the downtown area, tend to cost a little bit less than the newer homes. Beachfront property is generally pricey for obvious reasons, and housing on the upper west side of Santa Cruz is in high demand due to its proximity to the University. Generally speaking, housing that is further away from the university and the beach tends to cost less. Housing in Davenport, Lompico, Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Scotts Valley and other areas in the Santa Cruz Mountains, San Lorenzo Valley, or Pajaro Valley generally cost even less, due to the fact that these areas are sort of out in the boondocks and require a vehicle in order to get anywhere.
