First Interstate Bank came to Santa Cruz County by buying Gavilan Bank in 1981. First Interstate Bank closed the Aptos branch sometime after 1982. In 1996, Wells Fargo Bank bought First Interstate Bank. Since Wells Fargo Bank already had a branch in Capitola, the newly acquired branch was sold. The Capitola Branch became Union Bank.
The name and logo of First Interstate Bank is currently used by First Interstate BancSystem based in Montana.
