The City of Santa Cruz has strict ordinances against graffiti in public spaces. Many of exterior walls around the downtown area are covered with beautiful, publicly funded murals serving as deterents for tagging.
However, freedom of expression also has a significant place in the hearts of Santa Cruzians. Radical theories of reclaiming public space, public airwaves, public education, and more permeate through the city and leave an indelible impression on the community.
Graffiti is often torn down, painted over, or destroyed by different people for different reasons. But the point of this page is not to condone or disallow the actions of any particular individual, but instead to document the often fleeting existence of art which undoubtedly is part of the Santa Cruz community and culture.
Adding New Pieces
When adding pictures, remember to include a title (if there isn't one, make one up if you want), the authors name (if there isn't one, which there probably won't be, write "Anonymous"), and the date and location where you found the piece. Hopefully there will be a template up soon to help facilitate adding to the gallery.
