ABOUT JAYME:
Jayme Kelly Curtis is one of the most active singers, songwriters and musicians on the local music scene. Her powerful, expressive voice has won fans world wide through her recordings and 30 to 40 live shows a year. She frequently produces and participates in specialty and split bill shows, including the phenomenally successful tributes to Joni Mitchell featuring a panoply of local talents. Jayme recently produced a six week long gallery exhibit and festival honoring the amazing number of high end guitar builders living and working in Santa Cruz. (There are 20.) The exhibit and festival events were exceptionally well attended. The exhibit itself was unusual in scope and creative execution and was widely photographed, video taped and blogged about. Jayme describes her original music as "folkloric Jazz" or "folk music with flugelhorns." Her recordings of original music have earned a string of accolades from local and international music critics, including Brad Kava, pop music critic for the San Jose Mercury News, who said "Catch this pure-voiced singer now, and it will be like you were lucky enough to see the Dixie Chicks when they were playing street corners." As a vocalist, she collaborates with local jazz players like pianist Steve Abrams, LA session guitarist Michael Rosati and her sweetheart Ukulele Dick. Most recently she is having a blast "folking up the Beatles" with The SkiffleBeats.
Jayme's passion has always been playing with other musicians and giving them plenty of room to stretch out and improvise. As a side project, Jayme backed up Laura Devine in the folk duo Dulcimer Girls for many years. She began her professional career as an underage singing cocktail waitress at the Iron Springs Chateau Melodrama Theatre in Manitou Springs, Colorado. As a teenager, she studied with Winfield finger style champion guitarist Rolly Brown. As a music major at Colorado College she received formal vocal coaching from Steve Sweetland.
Jayme was a regular for 15 years at California Coast Music Camp (www.musiccamp.org) and also served for three years on its board of directors. Jayme also helps organize and promote many other music education gatherings and also teaches selected students on a case by case basis. She encourages everyone who wants to play music to consider going to grown up music camp and/or attend local jam sessions. "If you want to play music," she says, "you have to get busy and play some music."
As a teacher, Jayme offers private lessons at her home in Felton. She also offers three courses to music retreats and camps: "Show Don't Tell: The Creative Tools of Songwriting," "How Songwriters Make Money," and "No FlySpecs: Music Phenomenon For The Rest of Us." She is also a tireless inclusive jam leader and musical instigator.
In 1997 Jayme founded the Boulder Creek Acoustic Music Society, a monthly acoustic jam session, and ran it faithfully for nine years. She is one of the original members of the popular Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz and has been a tireless champion of the accessible little instrument. Jayme sees the ukulele as a key tool in her quest for "the democratization of music." Live performances by Jayme have recently appeared in films documenting the current ukulele craze, including Mighty Uke and Under the Boardwalk: A Ukulele Love Story. Her original songs have been used as incidental music in a wide variety of television shows via licensing deals with various music libraries. Jayme's recordings have enjoyed terrestrial and Internet radio airplay on dozens of stations worldwide.
