Lost Camp and the Lost Empire Trail derive their name from when the Lost Empire Trail was first built. Emma McCrary was alone and carving the trail on horseback in 1987 when she became lost, hence the name. The 'Empire' portion of the name makes the same reference as Felton Empire Road and Empire Grade.
