Patelco is a credit union located in Santa Cruz with branches throughout Northern California. A credit union is a not-for-profit cooperative that offers the same basic services as a bank. This includes checking and savings accounts. Each deposit account is insured up to $250,000 by the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration). This type of insurance is just like FDIC insurance for banks. Your money is just as safe at a credit union as at a bank.
Patelco offers a free checking account that does not have a monthly fee. The minimum balance to open an account is $10. If you have a free checking account you can get a savings account with no monthly fee. The free checking pays zero interest. Interest checking requires either a minimum balance or direct deposit to be free.
Patelco is a member of the Co-Op ATM network. This network includes over 28,000 free credit union ATMs nationwide. There is also a Bay Federal Credit Union ATM at the UCSC Bay Tree Bookstore. This network also includes free access to ATMs at 7-Eleven stores. You can make ATM deposits at many other credit union ATMs, Bank of the West ATMs, and at some 7-Eleven ATMs.
Patelco is also a member of the CU Service Center network. This means that you can bank (make deposits, get cash, etc.) at other credit unions that are members of this network. You can bank in person at branches across all 50 states.
