Where Swanton Road crosses Queseria Creek. The special arched construction of the waterway under this road was a major part of making the stream better for fish.
Queseria Creek is located in northern Santa Cruz County in the Swanton area. It is considered a sub-watershed of the Scotts Creek Watershed. Queseria Creek flows into Scott Creek, sometimes called Scotts Creek in error. Due to restoration of Queseria Creek to make it better for fish spawning, the river length has been increased to 1.4 miles.
History
Pronounced, kay-suh-REE-uh, the name is Spanish and can mean "cheese factory" or refer to a place where cheese is made. It is known that James Archibald constructed a cheese house in 1867. While no longer making cheese, the building is still standing.
In 2004 California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, California finished a $350,000 project to create habitat and spawning grounds for coho salmon and steelhead trout in Queseria Creek. The money came from fund raising and grants from California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other organizations. Cal Poly owns some land near Queseria Creek. It is the subject of a 27 minute video documentary, “The Return Home.”
