As of July 15, 2016, Rabobank has moved from the corner of Mission Street/Soquel Avenue location in Santa Cruz to Claires Street in Capitola. It is an advantage for a bank to be closer to a center of business.
A Dutch bank. Established in 1972 with the merger of Coöperatieve Centrale Raiffeisen-Bank in Utrecht and the Coöperatieve Centrale Boerenleenbank in Eindhoven. It came to California by buying Valley Independent Bank in 2002. Since Valley Independent Bank was started in 1981, sources list 1981 as the start of Rabobank in the US. Rabobank changed the name of Valley Independent Bank in 2004, when they switched from a state charter to a national charter.
Unlike other banks of their size, Rabobank has no outstanding stock to trade. They are a private company. Rabobank is one of the 40 largest banks in the world.
Rabobank came to Santa Cruz County by buying Community Bank of Central California in 2006.
The name Rabobank is a portmanteau of RAiffeisen-BOerenleenBANK. Many have noticed the Spanish word for tail is "rabo." (The Spanis whord for robbery is "robo.")
