"Sears" is the current name. The name of the company was originally "Sears Roebuck & Co."

The Santa Cruz/Capitola branch of Sears was established a few years before the Capitola Mall was built in 1977. The mall is attached to Sears. To this day the Mall and Sears uses different addresses.  Sears uses the original address (Capitola Road in Santa Cruz), and not that of the Capitola Mall (41st Avenue in Capitola).

In January of 2017, the Santa Cruz Sears Store closed the Automotive Service area of the store. However, to the final days of the store, the Sears website still said, " At Sears Santa Cruz, you'll find the automotive services you need to keep your vehicle running smoothly."

Sears closed the Capitola retail store in November 2018.  Now the two nearest retail store is at the Eastridge Mall in San Jose, or the Northridge Mall in Salinas.  Sears Holdings Corp. still operates the two Kmart stores in Freedom and Scotts Valley.

Sears also had other facilities in Santa Cruz County.  Sears owned Budget Truck Rental. The facility in Freedom was an appliance store.

Sears Savings

On January 10, 1984,  Allstate Savings & Loan changed the name to became Sears Savings Bank.  Sears Savings was at 7851 Soquel Dr. in Aptos and 6265 Highway 9 in Felton. Sears Savings and Loan became the 11th largest in California. The Felton location was later closed. The Aptos branch last appeared as "Sears Savings Bank" in the 1985 city directory. The Aptos Branch was acquired by American Savings  in 1985. Sears Savings was bought by Citicorp Savings  in 1987. CitiCorp Saving closed the Aptos branch. The Aptos  location went through a few owners, and is now owned by Chase Bank.
