Description

In the summer of 1977, Neil Young heard that his old friend Jeff Blackburn from the Buffalo Springfield days was looking for a guitarist, and showed up in Santa Cruz.  Jeff’s band at the time (Jeff Blackburn Band) consisted of Bob Mosley on bass and Johnny Craviotto on drums. Neil joined up, and the band started playing gigs around town, calling themselves The Ducks. All four members contributed songs equally, and it was around this time that Neil and Jeff co-wrote “Hey Hey, My My.” The Ducks were short-lived due to other obligations, but that musical, magical summer was legendary for the beachside community of Santa Cruz, and shows were sold out quickly at venues such as The Catalyst, The Crossroads, Pacific Steamship Co., The old Vets Hall, The Back Room, and a show at the Civic Auditorium. Admission was free if you brought a duck call (Quack quack).
