Woolworth was a national retail chain with stores that first began the idea of selling goods of the 'five and dime' variety. As inflation pushed prices up, Woolworth ceased the limited price structure in the late 1940's. Woolworth became known for incidentals. Items were typical of what you would find at a drug store without the pharmacy. By 1965 Woolworth had the most food service locations in the USA.
The location on Pacific Avenue also had a diner with an open kitchen behind a lunch counter, and several booths lined the front windows on the left side of the store. There was a "Woolworth Express" in the Capitola Mall in the 1990's.
Nationally, the chain went out of business in July of 1997. The parent company adopted the name of Foot Locker and dropped the name Woolworth as well as selling the UK and Australian assets.
Gap is now located where the Woolworth was downtown.
