Golden West Savings and Loan came to Santa Cruz by buying Grove-Portola Savings and Loan in 1970. Then bought Santa Cruz Savings and Loan in 1972.

In 1975, Golden West bought World Savings and Loan and retained the name World Savings and Loan for the branches, and Golden West Financial for the holding company. The downtown location moved FROM 1447 Pacific Avenue to the 1551 Pacific Avenue location in 1977.

World Savings was the last Savings and loan in Santa Cruz County. When it was bought by another chain, it became a Bank. In 2007, the chain was bought by Wachovia Bank. All branches in Santa Cruz were converted by October 2007. In 2009 Wells Fargo Bank bought Wachovia. Wells Fargo Bank already had an office downtown Santa Cruz and sold the Pacific Avenue branch to Bank of the West in 2009.
