The Great Exchange is a weekly classified ads paper serving Santa Cruz County. By offering free ads for low-cost items, the paper became popular dislodging  the Buy and Sell Press in the '70s. TGE was a local favorite and offered many small businesses the chance to affordably advertise services, like carpentry, earth moving and cleaning (plus many more). TGE was also early online in 1996. However TGE didn't allow advertisers to place ads online real time, which ultimately caused TGE to fail to Craig's List, even though Craig's List never has served Santa Cruz County directly and was much more expensive for help wanted and service advertisements. But TGE did have a fantastic run for 34 years.
