Car sharing is an alternative to car ownership that some see as more environmentally friendly because:
- it requires users to pay by the trip and/or the mile, meaning that users are likely to think twice before using a car, or to share a ride
- the cars are typically well maintained
- some carshare organizations maintain a large number of hybrids or compact vehicles in their fleet, which are more fuel efficient
San Francisco has a pretty high concentration of car share pickup locations, especially in the more central neighborhoods, like the Mission, Hayes Valley and SoMa.
There are two car share options in San Francisco:
Zipcar merged with Flexcar in 2007, and San Francisco is the first city to implement this change. Flexcar's Bay Area applicants are now directed to Zipcar's site.
