City CarShare is a non-profit based in San Francisco. Its members gain access to a fleet of cars that they share, paying for their use by the hour and the mile, in addition to a monthly fee. For San Francisco and East Bay residents who use cars infrequently or who drive primarily within the city/East Bay area, joining City Carshare can be a much more appealing alternative to owning a car.
City CarShare began in 2001 and partners with a number of local agencies and nonprofits. In 2006, Flexcar (now Zipcar) and Zipcar entered the car sharing markets.
Their primary competitor is the for-profit Zipcar (Flexcar and Zipcar merged).
