Dolby Laboratories was founded by Ray Dolby in 1965 in Wooten Bassett, UK. Dolby, a San Francisco native, later moved the world headquarters to San Francisco, where it is located today. Dolby is perhaps best known for the development of its Dolby B-type Noise Reduction, as well as Dolby Surround Sound and Dolby Digital ("5.1"). Today it continues to be a relevant and exciting force in the world of audio technology.
Dolby Laboratories is among a small group of Bay Area technology companies that have chosen to stay in the city, rather than relocate to Silicon Valley. Its distinctive glass building is easily visible when driving past 9th Street on the 80.
