Doobu is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Japantown. Though its brightly colored, kooky-lettered sign might lead you to expect a lower quality of food and a pedestrian dining experience, the place is actually kind of elegant — and its prices reflect that. Soup (available in 10 varieties) costs $9, while non-salad entrees cost more along the lines of $11 to $15. Every weekday from 11 am to 3 pm, Doobu serves a lunch special for $8 that includes tofu soup, tofu salad, 3 sides, and either galbi, bulgogi, spicy pork, or chicken teriyaki. Before the main course, diners are served six or so bowls of appetizers such as kimchi and glass noodles, and each diner is provided a personal-size deep-fried fish. With the check, each person gets a small bottle of something that could only be described by those unacquainted with Korean food as drinkable mango-strawberry yogurt.
