The San Francisco Bay Area, also commonly referred to as the Bay Area or the Bay, refers to the greater metropolitan region including and surrounding the city of San Francisco, San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay. Overall the Bay Area consists of nine counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma.
Subregions
The Bay Area is further subdivided into several regions: The North Bay, San Francisco (known locally as "The City"), the Peninsula, East Bay, and South Bay.
