Laughing Squid is a nebulous tenticalled thing, but can mostly be summed up as a popular weblog run primarily by Scott Beale on "art, culture and technology from San Francisco and beyond." Beale is a talented photographer and has gained some notoriety by photographing many popular technology / san francisco cultural events.
Laughing Squid has had its tenticles, at one point or another, in "Burning Man, ArtCar Fest, Defenestration, Survival Research Labs, The Cacophony Society, SEEMEN, the extended universe of Chicken John, Power Tool Drag Races, Black Rock Arts Foundation, RoboGames, Santarchy (Santacon), Webzine, the original BarCamp, Maker Faire, BrainJams, dorkbot-sf, How to Destroy the Universe and Hi Fructose Magazine."

The Squid List
The Squid List is a Laughing-Squid mainted list of "art, culture and technology events taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area." FAQ. The Squid List started as a simple mailing list (similar to how craigslist began) in 1997 and has been kicking out event schedules since.
Laughing Squid Web Hosting
Laughing Squid also provides paid web hosting for many area organizations (full customer list) at laughingsquid.net. Laughing Squid Web Hosting provides Laughing Squid (community) the funds necessary to roam from awesome event to awesome event, taking awesome photos. The web hosting side of Laughing Squid began in 1998.
