The Presidio is a former military base established in 1776 that is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The area, which covers 1,491 acres at the northern tip of San Francisco, is home to Crissy Field, Baker Beach, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Internet Archive, and the San Francisco National Cemetery. The Golden Gate Bridge extends to the north bay from Highway 101 via the Presidio.

History

The area was originally inhabited by the Ohlone Indians until it was settled by Spanish colonists in 1776 and named "El Presidio." The Presidio changed hands twice over the next 70 years, first to Mexico in 1822, and then to the United States in 1846. In 1861, during the Civil War, the Presidio underwent much expansion due to its strategic location.
