Besides being the state capital of Florida, Tallahassee is an old-fashioned college town.

Established in 1851, Florida State University issues over 2,000 degrees a year from over fifteen colleges to a population of over 40,000 students.  Formerly the Florida State College for Women (until 1947), after World War II Florida State began accepting male students again with a high demand from returning veterans.  FSU is a major national research university, the home of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and where the drug Taxol was developed.  With 12 national titles between 18 teams, FSU is well-known for strong athletic programs and Seminole sporting events are an integral part of life in Tallahassee, with the whole city growing quiet on a football Saturday.  A major part of the economy in Tallahassee - employing over 8,000 residents -  FSU is also a major player in local and state civic life.  The faculty includes recipients of the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize and Academy Awards.  (Photo credit: Steven Martin).  Find Florida State University online at http://www.fsu.edu.

Home to more than 13,000 undergraduate and graduate students, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU or Florida A&M) is an 1890 land-grant institution and the largest predominantly black state university in the country.  The university has over 13 colleges, offers 62 bachelor's degrees in 103 majors/tracks.  Florida A&M Rattlers are in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and participate in NCAA Division I-AA.  They are well-known for the "Marching 100" marching band which has performed all over the world. Established in 1966, Tallahassee Community College (TCC) provides post-secondary education to Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla County students, along with students from across the state of Florida.  TCC is a member of the Florida College System.  They offer over 80 associate degree and certificate programs TCC is highly engaged with the local Tallahassee community, housing the Center for Workforce Development, TCC Capitol Center downtown, and the Florida Public Safety Institute.  Find TCC online at www.tcc.fl.edu.

The Center for Participant Education was established in 1970 as an alternative to the traditional curriculum taught at FSU.  Students wanted to explore socially relevant topics and to foster a healthier philosophy of education that anyone could teach or attend.
