Congregation Beth Shalom is the only Jewish synagogue in the Yuba-Sutter area. It is a Reform Jewish congregation and belongs to the Union for Reform Judaism.

Reform Judaism is the largest Jewish movement in the United States. It is considered more liberal than Orthodox Judaism and Conservative Judaism, but more conservative than Reconstructionist Judaism. Reform Jewish congregations are allowed to ordain women and lesbian and gay people. Reform Jewish rabbis are allowed to officiate at same-sex union ceremonies, but the movement does not consider same-sex unions to be marriages under Jewish law.

The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey conducted in 2007 by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that 79% of Jewish people in the U.S. believe homosexuality should be accepted. Only Buddhists (82%) had a higher rate of acceptance.1
