The Hairdressing and Shaving Saloon was established in 1875 by Edward Park Duplex, who was later elected mayor of Wheatland in 1888. He was the first African-American man to be elected mayor of a western United States city. The Hairdressing and Shaving Saloon has remained in business as a barbershop continuously since 1875, although it has sometimes been known by the name "George's Barber Shop."
