Nelson Slough is a seasonal slough that is about 2.5 miles long and runs along the west bank of the Feather River, south of Tudor. In the winter, it diverts overflow from the Feather River into the Sutter Bypass. In the summer, it dries up.

The Nelson Slough Unit of the Feather River State Wildlife Area is bounded on the north and south by the Bobelaine Audubon Sanctuary and the Sutter Bypass, and on the east and west by the Feather River and Nelson Slough. Garden Highway crosses the Feather River in the middle of the Nelson Slough Unit. Some rice fields extend into the Nelson Slough Unit.
