Sutter is a census-designated place in Sutter County. It is located southeast of the Sutter Buttes; southwest of Encinal, Sanders, and Nuestro; west of Alemandra; north of the Sutter National Wildlife Refuge; northeast of Josephine; and east of Tarke. It is bounded approximately on the north and south by McKee Lane and Highway 20 and on the east and west by Wadsworth Canal and the Sutter Buttes. It has a population of 2,885 (as of the 2000 census). Its elevation is 75 feet. The average annual rainfall is 18.1 inches. The average high temperature in July is 96.3°, and the average low temperature in January is 38.0°.

The native plant community of Sutter is central oak woodland.

Demographics

As of a July 2007 estimate1, residents' median age was 33 years.

80.3% of residents were white and non-Hispanic, followed by 12.4% of residents who were Hispanic, 5.4% who were multiracial, and 5.1% who were Native American.

Of residents 25 or older, 77.8% had at least a high school degree, 14.9% had at least a bachelor's degree, and 0.5% had a graduate or professional degree. Sutter has the lowest proportion of residents with graduate or professional degrees in the Yuba-Sutter area.

Of residents 15 or older, 59.2% were married, 23.0% had never married, 10.0% were divorced, 5.4% were widowed, and 2.4% were separated.

6.3% of households were headed by unmarried partners. 0.3% of households were headed by self-identified same-sex couples.

For employed residents, the average travel time to work was 28 minutes. The most common industry for males to work in was the construction industry (23%). The most common industries for females to work in were education (17%), health care (10%), accommodation and food services (10%), and finance or insurance (10%). Sutter has an unusually high proportion of finance or insurance workers, compared to the rest of the Yuba-Sutter area.

The 2007 median annual household income was $55,293 and 2008 median home price was $206,890. 12.2% of residents were below the poverty level in 2007, and 5.9% were below half the poverty level. The 2008 cost of living index was 88.4 (the United States average is 100).

History

Sutter is named for John Sutter.

Thompson's Seedless Grape was first propagated in 1872, slightly west of Sutter. A historical marker now stands on Highway 20 at the spot where it was propagated.
