Kapunda Herald 22/7/1887 p286e-f

Barman North Kapunda Hotel 1863-1869 Mr White landlord. Temporarily in charge of this hotel in 1869 and then Leasingham 1870. To the Southern Cross where friends lent him £750 to purchase the lease. Retired to Kapunda in 1879 and bought much of the Mine and equipment which he worked successfully for some years. Trip to England to see his parents. Kapunda Councillor. Sold his mine interests and took on the Railway Hotel before going to Adelaide to the London Inn in Flinders St. Retired to a house in Roper St shortly before his death.

m 16/7/1875 Adelaide, Emily nee COCKER. Sister to John Selby Cocker of the Kentish Arms North Adelaide. Morton was also a brother in law of James Stack, a compositor.

Kapunda Herald 22/2/1876 p61c

Our old townsman, WR Morton, now of the Southern Cross Hotel, Adelaide is advertising his business for sale. Mr Morton’s retirement from public life would seem to imply that he has made his pile, and such we believe is the case. His success in life has been rather remarkable; he was well known in this town when he held a responsible position at Crase’s Hotel, where his smartness and civility won him many friends. These qualities commended him to the notice of several gentleman, and on two or three occasions he was employed to take charge of the business of certain hotels during an interregnum. The last opportunity of this kind occurred in Adelaide, and resulted in his taking the Southern Cross on his own account, where for the past three and a half years his career has been a most successful one. His 11 o’clock luncheons are quite an institution and at this hour every day his house is crowded. The extent of his business may be gathered from the fact that last year he paid for colonial ale alone upwards of £1,000, besides a much larger amount for English ale, porter, wines spirits etc. We understand Mr Morton, having acquired a comfortable little competency, intends paying a vist to the old country, and we are sure his numerous friends will join us in wishing him a pleasant trip and speedy return.

Kapunda Herald 3/3/1876 p73a

Mr Morton, the popular landlord of the Southern Cross, has disposed of the lease of his hotel … He entered the Southern Cross with very little superfluous cash, and by a management that is quite unique, so far as the history of Adelaide is concerned, he has succeeded in making a moderate fortune in an incredibly short space of time. … His rooms are picture galleries filled with paintings of directly local interest, so that they cannot fail to attract. His liquors are good, and the attendants are smart and attentive. Everybody speaks well of the place; everybody likes it; and as a consequence there is a throng from morning till night. Mr Morton is deserving of credit for being the first in Adelaide to close on Sunday - in fact, his hotel has been a model establishment from the moment he took possession of it … His example has been instrumental in effecting a marked improvement in the management of some of the other hotels in the city.

Kapunda Herald 26/7/1887 p293b Morton Inquest

Did not do very well at the London Inn, which he gave up in May 1887. He had a good many troubles of late and his conduct had been strange for some time. Was aware that her husband had attempted suicide four or five times prior to his being found drowned. Widow and six children - 7 to 3 months.
