Some background re William Luke

His father, John Luke, worked as a miner for many years in the old Port Phillip Mine in Victoria. Born c1837 d c August 1907 Clunes Vic, at the residence of his sister, Mrs Crawford of Smeaton Road, of pneumonia.

John Luke the Younger was the son of John Luke the Elder and Sarah Mary Luke. Because his mother’s maiden name is unknown at this point, it is likely that John Luke the Younger emigrated alone or with his parents from probably Cornwall, England. Perhaps at Clunes Vic, John Luke the Younger m Martha nee FORD, a daughter of John Ford and Sarah nee HAMMOND, and probably born in Victoria. Names and dates for some of the events above would come from the Victorian Births, Deaths and Marriages records.

Martin Luke b & d 1865 Clunes Vic

Mary Jane Luke b 1867 Clunes Vic

William Luke b 1871 Clunes Vic

Eveline Luke b 1877 d 1878 Clunes Vic

Only Mary Jane Luke and William Luke apparently survived to reach adulthood. No mention of Mary Jane Luke in SA. William Luke must have made his own way to SA, where he m 26/12/1900 Methodist Church Goodwood, Elsie Adeline nee Meadowcroft.

The newly married couple made their way to Broken Hill NSW, where their four sons and two daughters were born. The youngest son died in infancy. Elsie Adeline Luke nee Meadowcroft d 11/6/1911 Broken Hill and her husband William Luke d 1/1/1918 Broken Hill.

It seems that the children returned to their Grandmother Meadowcroft in SA. Grandfather JF Meadowcroft had died before his daughter Elsie Luke died. Elsie Luke’s two surviving sisters and her eldest brother moved to WA with their families. Grandmother Meadowcroft and apparently her granddaughter Florence Luke also went to WA, where Florence Luke m a Mr Cook.

Martha Elsie Luke remained in SA perhaps with relatives (likely her uncles) in the vicinity of Forestville, because she married Carl Roy Bansemer on 18/10/1930 at the Methodist Church Goodwood, where her parents had married some thirty years previously. Her three brothers, Colin, Martin and John Luke, apparently were fostered out to different families, but all came to work in the Glen Ellen Cannery at Hahndorf and Norwood, which John Luke’s foster mother, Miss Dorothy Darby (later Mrs AM Boyer), had established.
