Hahndorf Founding Families Reunion

23 February, services from 10.30am, Pioneer Memorial Gardens, 71 Main Street, Hahndorf.

The day will begin with descendants attending Church services followed by a walk in traditional costume to the Pioneer Gardens for activities and lunch.

The Founding Families Reunion, 23 Feb 2014  -  Originally organised as a Gallasch family reunion commemorating the 175th anniversary of Johann Gallasch and his family arriving at Port Misery, now West Lakes, on the 25th January 1839, it was subsequently decided to include all the founding families of Hahndorf.  This included all those families on the Zebra, Prince George, Bengalee and Catharina.  They came from near and far, across South Australia and Victoria.  Many descendants attended the commemorative Church Services at St Pauls and St. Michaels Church, while others came straight to Johnston Park, in the centre of Hahndorf, for a day of celebrations.  Excerpts of a letter from a descendent of Captain Hahn were read to a gathering in front of the Memorial Gate at the Pioneer Memorial Gardens.  A prayer of thanks was offered by Pastors of the local Lutheran Churches.  Commemorative group photographs of Descendants present were taken on St Michaels oval.

Food Stalls and tents representing various families had been set up in Alec Johnston Park.  There were displays of memorabilia and archival material, with family history books for sale, the Hahndorf Shooting Club and Hahndorf Band displayed items relating to their long association with the town.  Further family information was available from the Lutheran Archives and S.A. Genealogy.  Enjoying perfect Hahndorf weather, a crowd of some 500 descendents with many visitors viewed the displays, listened to the Town Band, renewed old acquaintances or met with new family members.  The total attendance was estimated at in excess of twelve hundred.  What a truly wonderful day it was and a credit to the Town of Hahndorf!     (Extract from Hahndorf Village Voice #37)
