On October 25, 1893, a northbound Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan freight train toppled into the swamp a few miles north of Hamburg Junction. The engine and two tank cars full of oil caught fire, killing the engineer, fireman, and brakeman. Flames reached 100 feet high and were said to be visible in the night sky from 40 miles away.
