Obituary

Carl A. Brauer, Jr. died peacefully on Saturday, July 13th 2013. After walking with the Lord for his entire life, he is now dwelling with Him. Carl was born December 3rd, 1923 in Ann Arbor to Pastor Carl A. Brauer, Sr. and his wife Alice. Carl Jr. was married to Isabelle Schmidtke on June 24, 1945. They had four children; Carol (Schmidt), Charles, Janet (Ash/Ohanesian), and Richard. Charles preceded him in death in 1985, as did Isabelle in 2004 after nearly 60 years of marriage. Carl was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He served there twice as President and on numerous committees throughout his membership there. Carl graduated from UofM in 1945 with a B.S. in Engineering and was in the R.O.T.C. program there from 1943-45. Following a brief 3 years in Engineering, Carl began his career in real estate. He started in residential realty and formed his own brokerage company. In 1965 he branched out into developing land and formed Brauer Development Company. Among his many accomplishments were the Plymouth Green Shopping Center, Jackson Plaza Business Park, Silo Ridge Subdivision, Barton Farms Subdivision and the Brauer Building in downtown Ann Arbor. Carl was an active member in the Ann Arbor community serving in various capacities and on several committees and the city council. He was on the Board of Directors of the UofM Musical Society, Glacier Hills Nursing & Retirement Center and Valparaiso University. In 1977 Carl and Isabelle formed the Brauer Foundation that throughout the years has been blessed to give funds to countless organizations. The directive statement is that the recipients be "Those causes whose organization motives and philosophy are a direct result of the love of Jesus Christ and His requirement of us as Christians to serve our fellow man." The foundation is still active today with Carl's children continuing their service as trustees. Although Carl was gratified in and grateful for his many accomplishments, his most lasting legacy is surely with his family. He and Isabelle lived very deliberately to create a close and loving family with bonds that have affected and included all of the generations to this day. The most important piece of that legacy being his strong and constant faith in the God of Scripture. Found among his papers and penned in his own hand was his "Life Goal - In response to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and His overwhelming love, forgiveness, and blessings throughout my life, and consistent with the talents and abilities and opportunities He has given me, I want and strive to be a positive factor in the lives of others, so that they too will come to know and accept Him." All of Carl's family and those who knew him say heartily to him, "Well done, Carl." He is survived by his three children, nine grandchildren and 13 great grand-children.Visitation will be on Friday, July 19th from 4-7pm at Muehlig Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will be Saturday the 20th at 2pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donation may be given to a charity close to your heart or to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
