Obituary

Age 89, passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Superior Woods. He was born February 26, 1921 in Fairmont WV, son of Charles T. and Versa (Hickman) Anderson. He received his BA in math from Fairmont State College and then his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Ohio State University where he met his wife, Mary Virginia Hendrick. They married June 10, 1950 and she survives. They moved to Ypsilanti in 1955 and he taught chemistry at EMU until his retirement in 1987. He was named Professor Emeritus and served as a Marshall at commencements for 50 years. Charles was also a member of the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club since 1974 where he served as Lt. Governor in 1988 and received the George E. Hixson Fellowship in 1995. In 1999 he received the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award from EMU. Charles was an avid traveler and theatergoer and regularly arranged group theater trips for friends. Charles and Virginia attended the Shakespeare Festival Theater in Stratford, Ontario every year from 1953-2009. In addition to his loving wife, Virginia, of over 60yrs, survivors include: his daughter, Kathy (Bruce) Fergusson of Sterling Heights and his son, David (Akosua) Anderson of Ypsilanti; and his grandchildren, Scott and Laura Fergusson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack. Cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be 1:30pm Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Stark Funeral Service. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club.
