Michigan is the state (of the United States of America) that the city of Ann Arbor resides. The name Michigan is derived from the Indian word Michigama, meaning great or large lake and Michigan is also called the "Great Lakes State" or "Wolverine State". Michigan gained statehood on January 26, 1837, to become the 26th state of the union. The capitol is currently in Lansing (since 1847), but previously it was in Detroit. Ann Arbor was originally considered for the capitol, but we got the University of Michigan instead. The State Motto is "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice", which translates roughly, "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." Enjoy.
